Of marital rape and other laws – Part 2

This in from havingdeadcats.com:

Another abhorrent law has passed in Afghanistan, showing the barbarism of Islam.

  • It is now legal for shia men to deny food and sustenance to their wives if they refuse to obey their husband’s sexual demands.
  • Fathers and grandfathers have full guardianship over the children
  • Women must ask permission from their husbands to work.
  • A rapist can avoid prosecution by paying ‘blood money’ to a girl who was injured when he raped her.
  • “Tamkeen is the readiness of the wife to submit to her husband’s reasonable sexual enjoyment, and her prohibition from going out of the house, except in extreme circumstances, without her husband’s permission. If any of the above provisions are not followed by the wife she is considered disobedient.

According to abcnews:

“Karzai had promised to send the bill to parliament before it was published, but this week women’s rights advocates learned it had already become an enforceable law despite heavy international and national criticism.

Yes, this new and improved version of the rape law is an attempt by the Karzai administration to improve his chances of gaining enough votes in the first round of the August 20 elections by gaining the blessing of the Hazara religious elders as well as that of this guy:

The grand Ayatollah Asif Mohsini aka Ayatollah Kandahari. One must admit that the removal of a few clauses might have caused him a lot of sleep since he initially stated that “no power on Earth” could bring any changes to the initial form of the law. It is worth mentioning that this legislation had also been blessed by his excellency Ayatollah Mohaqiq Kabuli, the Hazara Ayatollah from Kabul.

So, Kudos to Mr. Karzai for playing it safe and smart while everyone else is busy with the selection/election.
